Science-based planning for effective coastal ecosystem rehabilitation

Project Overview
AVARI conducted a comprehensive mangrove planting assessment on Sebaru Island, Thousand Islands, to provide a scientific and technical basis for coastal ecosystem rehabilitation. The study integrated ecological baseline conditions, site suitability, environmental and social considerations, and relevant regulatory requirements to identify appropriate locations and approaches for mangrove planting while supporting the client’s broader environmental and sustainability commitments.

Our Approach

  • Coastal Ecosystem Baseline Assessment — evaluated existing environmental conditions, including water quality, soil characteristics, and the distribution of existing mangrove vegetation.
  • Site Suitability & Impact Analysis — assessed site suitability and potential environmental and social considerations associated with mangrove planting activities.
  • Policy & Regulatory Review — reviewed relevant spatial planning, coastal protection policies, environmental regulations, and sustainability requirements.
  • Technical Planting Recommendations — developed recommendations covering priority planting locations, suitable mangrove species, planting methods, maintenance, and monitoring strategies.

Project Outcome
The study delivered a comprehensive technical recommendation to guide the implementation of the mangrove planting program on Sebaru Island. The findings provided the client with an evidence-based foundation for planning rehabilitation activities, supporting coastal conservation and resilience while contributing to its broader sustainability and ESG objectives.
